At the 1st Contest of the Best Sommelier of Asia-Oceania and the General Meeting in Autumn 2009 of the ASI held at Rihga Royal Hotel on November 15 Sunday, 2009 welcomed many participants from all over the world.
As the first highlight of this event, Peter Lehmann welcoming Shiraz Welcome Party was held on the opening day.
The 150 participants included the applicants for the contest and their cheering parties as well as ASI directors and JSA directors.
After toasting with Peter Lehmann’s sparkling wine “Shiraz”, they enjoyed five items of Peter Lehmann’s wine and the cuisine prepared with the local ingredients in the Kansai district.
On behalf of the JSA Chairman Kogai made a few welcoming remarks,
“I would like to extend my sincere welcome to all of the participants from 37 nations and regions. The previous ASI Contest was held in 1995. I am pleased to see familiar friends again. I hope that all the participants will have an enjoyable time during the 3-day event.”
Peter Lehmann Wine representative Hans Aström proposed a toast greeting “I hope that everybody will enjoy Peter Lehmann wine.”

At the party the successive champions of the International Contest of the Best Sommelier made comments on each wine either in English or in French.
Deputy Chairman Tasaki made a comment on Peter Lehmann’s Riesling.
Japanese applicants Tani and Mori mentioned, “We are surprised to know the high level of the sommeliers of the world and especially the fact that they speak English or French so well. We will get a grip on ourselves for the contest.”
Many applicants for the contest have come to Japan for the first time.
They said that they were looking forward to the program such as sightseeing and various events during their 3-day stay in Japan and that they would be fully prepared for the contest.
