Toward the evening the air has become chilly and keen. The participants wrapped in their coats and scarves experienced boating on “Jikkokubune”, pleasure boat along the Fushimi Waterway.
The boat shuttles between Gekkeikan Okura Memorial Museum and Misu Lock Gate Museum passing several sake breweries and a historic spot Teradaya Inn.
The waterway used to be a moat around Fushimi Momoyama Castle. “Jikkokubune” carried people along the Yodo River and the Uji River during the Edo period when transportation by land was not developed.

It was built for boats to sail between the Uji River and the Yodo River whose water levels are different.

In 1999 “Jikkokubune” revived as pleasure boats in memory of the 400th anniversary of the opening of Fushimi Port.

The boatman explained how hard it was to sail in the past and why the boat has a flat bottom.
